We have looked all around the web to find the most relevant answer to your query:

Which country first tried to build the Panama Canal?

  • France:The first time an idea to create a waterway across the isthmus of Panama to connect the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans surfaced was in the 1500s. Spain's King Charles I instructed his regional governor to check out a possible route along the Chagres River. It wasn't until the 1880s that France actually broke ground on a construction project to cut a canal across the isthmus of Panama. The project failed and funding dried up in 1888. It was in 1904 that the U.S. took up the project to build a canal across a 50-mile stretch of the Panama isthmus. The completed canal opened in 1914 under U.S. oversight. Panama assumed the oversight of the Panama Canal in 1999. Source: History.com
