Alexander Graham Bell invented the metal detector to search for a bullet in which President?

  • James A. Garfield:In 1881, Alexander Graham Bell created the metal detector as a last ditch effort to locate a bullet lodged in the chest of President James Garfield, after he was shot by a deranged gunman. Bell setup his machine at the White House, but he failed to locate the bullet. Disappointed, he wondered if there was some metal in the president’s bed that interfered with the test. He learned the next day that the president lay on a mattress “composed of steel wires.” Bell was eager to try again, but he never got the chance. On September 19 1881, after 79 days of agony, James Garfield died of septic poisoning.
