Who was known as the "King of Swing"?

  • Benny Goodman:Raised in Chicago, Benny Goodman rose from poverty to become the poster boy for the Swing Era. Known as the "King of Swing", he is best remembered as one of the greatest clarinetists of all time, reaching the height of his popularity in the 1930s when swing was most popular. His jazz concert on January 16, 1938 at Carnegie Hall in New York City, introduced jazz to the world stage. Beyond music, Goodman had a huge impact on American culture. In 1936, he hired Teddy Wilson to play piano in his band which is now regarded as the first time a black musician appeared onstage with a white band.
