Which celestial body was named by an 11-year-old schoolgirl?

  • Pluto:Venetia Burney was only 11-years-old when her grandfather revealed the finding of a new planet to her over breakfast one morning. The newly discovered planet had not yet been named, prompting Venetia to suggest her own. Fascinated by both astronomy and classical mythology, Venetia came up with the name Pluto. Her grandfather, a retired librarian at the University of Oxford, forwarded the name to an Oxford astronomy professor, who sent a telegram to the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, where the planet had just been discovered. The name was formally adopted on May 1, 1930. Since its discovery, Pluto has since been demoted to a dwarf planet.
