What rap group did George Lucas successfully sue to prevent a member from using the name Luke Skywalker?
- 2 Live Crew:In 1990, filmaker George Lucas filed a $300 million federal lawsuit against Luther Cambell, the frontman of the rap group 2 Live Crew. The suit claimed that Campbell, by using the name Luke Skyywalker, had engaged in unfair competition and infringement on a licensed Lucas trademark. Luke Skywalker is of course the fictional hero of Lucas’ blockbuster “Star Wars” trilogy. The judge demanded that Campbell stop using the Skywalker name pending the outcome of the lawsuit. After getting arrested for wearing a Luke Skywalker logo shirt against the judge’s orders, Cambell agreed to pay Lucas $300,000 in an out-of-court settlement.
